Swedish manufacturer of the R5 specification Mitsubishi Mirage Mpart AB, has revealed it has been developing an all-electric version of its Swedish-built rally car since 2015: the Mirage R5e.

For Örebro-based Mpart AB, getting its four R5 specification Mitsubishi Mirages into the top four places of the National 4 Class on Rally Sweden was exactly what the team was hoping for, the result showcasing the cars on the global stage and confirming their inherent reliability. The four-car Mirage charge was led by Anders Karlsson and his co-driver Björn Nilsson, who dominated the event’s National category and recorded a top 30 overall finish in the process.

The Rally Johor is this year’s Malaysian round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship and, having finished second in the equivalent event last year, the MPart team were eager to repeat the performance. Using his experience from 2016 when he described the event as ‘the most challenging rally in the world’, Jari Ketomaa together with his co-driver Ville Mannisenmäki, finished third and in doing so, claimed their second podium result of the season.

Following a fiercely fought battle throughout the event, British driver Simon Mauger scored the first outright win for the Spencer Sport Mitsubishi Mirage and in doing so, scored his sixth personal victory in the Jersey Rally. Their second place on the Rally Isle of Man – the seventh and final round of the British Rally Championship – secured their victory in the category that they had led since the middle of the season.

Following its brief appraisal outing in January, the new R5 specification Mitsubishi is now going through a process of technical accreditation. This included a visit by representatives of the SBF (Svenska Bilsportförbundet - the governing body for Motorsport in Sweden), who are now assessing the information.
