R5 specification Mitsubishi gets set for extensive test and development programme

7 February 2015

Örebro, Sweden

Following its brief appraisal outing in January, the new R5 specification Mitsubishi is now going through a process of technical accreditation. This included a visit by representatives of the SBF (Svenska Bilsportförbundet - the governing body for Motorsport in Sweden), who are now assessing the information.

The technical accreditation will enable the R5 specification Mitsubishi to enter national events as part of its planned development programme, as Tomas Weng of Mpart AB - who is responsible for the design, engineering and development of the car - explains:

“We want to start our test and development programme as soon as possible and therefore, we entered this weekend’s opening round of the Swedish Rally Championship in advance of the technical accreditation being completed - just in case we had the opportunity to run the car. Whilst there was nothing wrong with things from a technical perspective, we have to wait for the paperwork to be signed off. We are now planning to enter the next round of the Swedish Championship.”

The development work is scheduled to recommence next week with further live tests on snow stages. Tomas Weng is confident that his team can build on the success of the car’s first outing:

“The first test surpassed our expectations in every way. Other than a couple of small tweaks the car ran perfectly from the moment it was started to the moment we put it back on the trailer – and that’s not just a PR sound bite, it’s what really happened. We were particularly pleased with the performance of the Öhlins suspension that has been developed especially for the R5 specification Mitsubishi. This was only the first test, so we know there’s much more to come from the car.”
